I have recently joined a VC firm as portfolio analyst. Would like to know how I can grow in this firm, help this firm grow, how a portfolio department help the startups under them, how the department my more effective like what more processes we can build and what I should definitely learn from a VC.

My aim is to be able to help startups grow, to be able to advise them and all, and be able to understand the investment part as well.

Is it worth it to get someone to do your taxes as an associate (vs. using TurboTax, etc.)? Rising fourth year if that changes your thoughts.

What’s the deal at Jones Day Houston? No one seems to last there…

Do most firms start reporting years in September or January? Prior firm did an August year for counting hours and then another did January (both Amlaw 200). Looking at an Amlaw 100 to lateral in the fall (so trying to anticipate how much of the year I’ll have). I’ll ask what bonus/reporting year but just curious if most follow the same.

I’m a non-TX immigration attorney mentoring a UT student who went to my undergrad. He’s done incredibly well in OCI and pre-OCI. Thus far, he’s landed interviews with (all in Houston): Baker Botts, Sidley Austin, Kirkland, Winston Strawn, Reed Smith, Norton Rose, and Locke Lord. Also Perkins Coie in Dallas. He’s leaning transactional, but also open to litigation. Any insights/advice on these firms in the TX market? Any to avoid?

I work in energy in New Mexico and am just wondering if it's smarter to move to Dallas or Austin to practice. Family is tired of New Mexico and the wife wants a better community to live in so that's a factor too. Open to all opinions.
