Any tips for getting back up to speed, ramping up after parental leave? Understanding calendaring and parenting obligations make work different but just communicating to partners and such that I’m back and available.

Because you can no longer throw extra hours at problems, you need to become even more efficient. To Do Lists don’t provide enough detail, I now calendar working blocks and assign all tasks (or parts of them) to each block.

It’s like that wedding ceremony bit, about putting the balls (most important things) and sand (less important things) into a jar and making sure everything fits.

Tbh if your practice group is as busy as mine enjoy the downtime and use it to acclimate to your new dual obligations. It will pick up soon enough…
That being said, I reached out to the staffing partner and made sure to be visible and in office for the first few weeks back.

Have a call on Friday with the CEO of an environmental entrepreneurship non-profit. It could lead to a professional opportunity and maybe even billable work I can refer to my firm down the line. I’m going in with an open mind but little concrete information on his entity and goals and ways I could get involved. What questions would you ask such a person?

About to turn down a job offer that would nearly double my salary after speaking to several former associates of the firm and hearing some not so great things. The word “sweatshop” was used multiple times yet I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around it. This is truly “you can’t pay me enough to be part of that” in action. I am betting that I can get the same money at a place with a better culture - hopefully I am right!

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.

Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. I am a new (lateral) associate at a small firm where everyone currently works from the office. When I started, I wasn’t told specific firm hours. I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. Assuming that if I ask the partners they’ll say to use my discretion, what are reasonable hours to keep?

Any Probate attorneys? My mother just passed away and I have zero experience in this area.
