It’s generally hard to do — my advice would be to transfer within your firm first. Even if it’s only for 6 months and even if your firm doesn’t have the exact practice you want.

I did it. It was hard, but I was able to do it by taking a haircut in terms of class year and also switching to a midsize firm. In the end it was the right move as I was recently able to lateral back to a great big law firm and I have additional perspective that I can sometimes offer.

Depends on what practice areas you are talking about. Some have more transferable skill sets than others.

Also- have a mentor and sponsor. Those may be two different people.

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.

I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt.
