Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

You counter and say that you have institutional knowledge that an external applicant won't have. Ask them why they would pay more for an external candidate that will have less knowledge of the firm and is an unknown in terms of their actual ability.

Fantastic point! Good job! 👏
Don't ask silly questions. And try not to implode by speaking too fast
Yeah I think you have to demonstrate that your value is much higher than an external candidate, and you're aware of what external candidates would be expecting in the position. A combo of data about your own contributions and market research will help you create a strong case. Don't ask until you're ready to fully make the case though

The biggest downside to internal moves is that they know exactly what your level is and how much you make. Many companies even have a policy that requires an internal move to be lateral, meaning no change to compensation. That police can be overriden by the hiring manager and soon to be ex manager vouching for the candidates higher value, though without that, you have your existing compensation as an anchor of sorts.

This has been my experience too - all in the hiring managers hands
I’d really don’t know if this matters in this particular instance, but with all the layoffs that have been had all the literal institutional knowledge has walked out the door. I’ve only seen one cohort that stayed employed, with a layoff the cohorts are usually pretty large. this one was relatively small <30. All but two stayed in the company. That also meant that they moved to new jobs that may or may not have been similar to what they did. Again, losing institutional knowledge.
An internal move was forced on me this year. The company eliminated my position globally and gave us 90 days to find a new one or we'd be let go. I found something else and got promoted. My salary went up 10%. The rumor was that was the internal transfer raise this year. Good luck!
SAP 1, none of it is easy, but it needs to be done consistently. 60 days is a decent timeframe in order to post for internal positions. In this job market I’ve seen well qualified highly experienced USAA directors take a year to get hired on the outside.
