I do and yes
Super cost effective and if implemented correctly can be more effective than tableau. Personally, I’m a QlikView person... but Power BI is convincing me that it’s a better solution. It really is powerful yet has a low barrier to entry (in terms of learning the platform).
One thing to note about security is that access is tied to reports, not tabs, which can be limiting to some. I basically had to create three copies of the same report to circumvent this issue.
That being said, it's still a solid solution, much like Tableau. In my opinion Tableau works better in the visualisation aspect (customization is somewhat limited in PowerBI for some graphics) but PowerBI allows for more and easier Data Transformation and Cleansing, which is important considering that sometimes data is in garbage formats that you can't change in the source.
SD1. Why don’t you define what a truly powerful dashboard is? Tableau has 10 years of a head start on Power BI, it does have more more bells and whistles without a doubt. The moral of the story, if you want something cheap but don’t mind clunky, it’s Power BI. If you want all bells and whistles, better deployment options, and don’t mind paying a premium, use Tableau. I don’t know anything about QlikView, but personally I use/believe Bokeh/Dash for Python is the future because all these click and drag system will become obsolete sooner rather than later.
SC1 is right
I think it's fucking awful; also am strongly biased against all the click and drag dashboard tools. Can understand why people like to use them but just not my thing
You don’t need it if the client (or you) has an office ‘professional’ license
How many users? Everyone will need a Pro license to view dashboards. Normally $10/mo or less per user. If you have about 500 users, premium is the way to go.
Whenever I hear someone prefers Power BI, I think they’re are over the age of 40 and not very tech savvy. I find it very clunky with much more limited functionality in comparison to Tableau.
Also why would you use either of these for data cleansing? I suppose both work with R or Python APIs...but meh
What D1 said. Tableau has more bells and whistles and integrates well with R and Python for ML. Power BI and QlikView are both cheaper and you don’t have to be technical to use them. All three can be implemented securely. Sever shouldn’t run you that much a month. You should be able to spin up a VM for fairly cheap.
Thanks C1 & D1 . Is it cost effective as compare to tableau if we r using other Microsoft products (such as database, etl) as well ?
Agree with everyone. I've used it since the beginning and it keeps getting better and better. If your users want tables instead interactive visuals, then you can do that.
Thank You all !
How is our data secure in Power BI dashboard, as it seems only be available after logging through online account ?
@OP I believe you can restrict log in to certain users, but i haven’t looked at Power BI in a while
Organizational login, SSO, and row level security. Very secure.
Thank You all for your thoughts !
On the cost effectiveness point, I have researched that power bi report server , which is needed for releasing the dashboards to users ,is quite expensive (5k/month) , is there any other cost effective option in PBI to share the dashboards for users ?
Thanks D1 & LLC1 - I am trying to start the pilot with max 10 resources at clients side, so trying to find out how can I make dashboard accessible to them with minimal cost.
Well I find people who prefer Tableau to not be tech savvy. I find it’s great for mapping but for a truly powerful dashboard, you would use QlikView.
But in all seriousness, different data tools have different purposes. Power BI happens to be a ubiquitous tool offered by Microsoft Office. It does have more advanced functionality than Tableau in some cases. Many times, data analysts are constrained by money, resources, and requirements of the users.
I’m happy that people use analytical tools because anything is better than Excel and Access. #DontbeaHater
