I keep my personal views private as you can't win - just smile and wave!
Agreed 100%. Keep convos plain vanilla.
OP just got cancelled
I can’t speak my mind in today’s world. My opinion is not allowed or welcomed because it isn’t woke.
I’m curious. What “woke” beliefs among your partners do you think are going too far?
I’m with OP. The issue is our firms at least have messaging that the younger generation wants us to take a political stance. This seems to be a larger business trend of going from valuing Shareholders to Stakeholders and being “woke” is currently profitable. I voice my opinion regularly when I feel that we shouldn’t opine on issues or disagree with the message. The result is I was put on our DEI team - so don’t raise issues/concerns if you don’t have a solution or aren’t willing to engage in finding one. Ut if you’re a partner in a partnership - you should feel empowered to speak your mind. Knowing it’ll likely result in more work…
Not really. I tend to just follow the golden rule as it relates to everyone and give the benefit of the doubt that all people just want a shot and to be heard and feel respected. Never felt pressure to be more “woke” than that. Quite the contrary, I’ve felt the implicit pressure to downplay the wants of staff who don’t have the same aspirations that I do - more of the Get Off My Lawn Whippersnappers! Which I find to be bullshit and a far more forced belief than anything else.
I post nothing. I just speak with my team but I do agree with you. I don’t say my opinions much anymore. It’s truly interesting times.
So when it comes time to retire take the lump Sum, and wave high on the way out.
Another complexity to this is that as a Partner - your opinion/voice carries a lot of power. Even when expressing your own personal opinion, staff may feel pressured that it’s “the” opinion and you are speaking on behalf of the firm. It’s almost easier not to say anything about anything these days….sigh
I’m referring to staff mostly. If I post anything other than far left politically or other than that I fully support permanent work from home with no mention of potential adverse career consequences, there is the predictable yet annoying “Ok boomer” comment etc. It’s not just me. I see it time and time again those with practical viewpoints that don’t toe the “Wokest” of lines are mostly lambasted and bullied in these bowls.
I guess the reality is…. Why do you care? Why try to instruct anyone on how to manage their career on a message board? Who are you to say that there will be adverse consequences if they work from home? Just because it would have for you? Just let it go and they will figure it out. “Ok boomer” really means: please stop talking down to me. This generation is actually more uplifting and supportive of each other than we were/are. All we did was talk shit and push people down for being different. They don’t think that way, at all. So when they see you not affirming someone and instead talking to them like they are dumb, it is a dead giveaway.
Why do you post stuff on the internet?
I’m not talking about the internet. I’m talking about Fishbowl specifically.
This too shall pass. The best rule was always and remains that work is no place to discuss politics, race and religion. It only creates a tough environment to work in because disagreements on these topics are as old as mankind. I am speaking my mind when the audience is right and ready to hear it. Which means not on public forums or with junior team members. They haven’t seen yet what it means…
Author, who carries these assumptions? Other Partners? Staff? Outsiders?
I agree with OP on these assumptions
Here’s my sad perspective. TRUTH: I love my team(s). I support them from their perspectives on returning to the office and making sure they have appropriately planned for their PTO. I also understand your message and keep my views to myself. When asked I support my firms policies - and btw I agree w those policies. It’s harder if you don’t and I understand that but as others have said, your voice carry’s weight. Be careful how you message your beliefs yet trying to understand your teams view. Always happy to discuss directly
