The theory is that it suppresses their natural startle reflex but I don’t think there is any harm! Now I will say we did not swaddle our first baby and went straight to sleep sacks so we didn’t have to deal with a transition later on and he was a great sleeper. But each baby is different, be open to what works for yours 😊
Its not really about "being open" just more of a general question. We're 2/2 on swaddling so I'll be taking my own advice over a first time mom.
Swaddling actually can lead to sids. I'm not sure of all scenarios, but I do know specifically that it is generally considered unsafe in breastfeeding groups that recommend co-sleeping, because the baby uses their hands to help feed and they need to be able to push the breast away.
Again, it is incredibly specific, but as a breastfeeding mom who coslept, I definitely didn't swaddle any of my babies and can absolutely see how doing so could have been dangerous.
I dont disagree, but many sleeping related deaths in infants are classified as SIDS. Again, I was only seeking to help OP understand why someone might suggest swaddling can cause SIDS.
It’s personal preference but my baby was in the NICU and no one ever told us not to swaddle. She didn’t like it anyway though so we quickly transitioned to footie pajamas instead. As long as they’re not rolling I think swaddling is fine but there’s no point in arguing with her friend. At the end of the day if she chooses not to swaddle her baby will be fine.
No, there's not increased risks of SIDS. I think that concept comes from "loose blankets" in the crib with them, but if swaddled correctly it should be snug. And even then, the "loose blankets" is usually in reference to bulky duvets and comforter type items, not thin swaddle blankets.
