Anyone feel like their work is subpar after coming back from maternity leave? Any tips appreciated.

I am 6 months pp and came back to work a month ago. It’s still really hard for me. At 12 weeks pp I was still in the THROES of ppd/PPA and literally couldn’t have functioned at work, so major kudos to you. The persistent problem for me in terms of brain functioning is the long term sleep deprivation. It’s brutal.

If your firm has AI tools, use them to your advantage. My firm has really good AI tools that have flagged things for me and have sort of helped me issue spot and come back online.

I think the only other tip is to ride this out and give yourself grace as someone else mentioned. We can only do our best.

Agree with this completely. I wrote a checklist for myself for finalizing a document and walked through it for each document. Added time and made me feel like a junior again, but it really helped me adjust. I found writing things down and / or saying them out loud really helped me organize. Your brain is in two places and that’s normal! You are doing a lot!

You just made a whole human. You’re sleep deprived and your hormones are all over the place. Give yourself some grace. It’s ok if you’re not at 100% yet.

A year after birth, my work is still not where it was before, and I’m learning to be okay with that.
But like others have said, 12 weeks is so early — please do not beat yourself up. Let trusted people you work with know you’re struggling, accept help where you can, try to build in time and processes for reviewing your work (like having your secretary proofread or another member on the team be a second set of eyes), and try to give yourself grace and time to adapt.

You gotta give yourself grace. I thought getting 16 weeks was going to magically be okay and it definitely wasn’t. I didn’t feel fully adjusted until my daughter was sleeping through the night, which wasn’t until she was 13 months! It’s hard but okay!

I’m going on almost 18 months and still haven’t had a full night of sleep. We are all just trying to survive out here. It’s not easy!

Also- your brain legitimately changes in pregnancy. This is normal, though i will say that kids occupy all this space in your brain and that doesn’t go away. Part of becoming a parent.

How long was your maternity leave?

Of course you are performing subpar! You still have a newborn and it’s a huge life adjustment. And you didn’t work for 12 weeks. My best advice is give yourself grace. You’ll ramp back up over time, but in this season of life you aren’t going to be a superpower at work, and that’s ok.

Like everyone else has said, it takes time and you may not get to 100% what you were before baby. But this can be an opportunity to slow down and think critically about every assignment as you're ramping up your workflow. You'll probably add value just by being more conscientious (creating checklists to streamline etc) while also building back those muscles.

I hate to say this (maybe it's just me), but I have an 8-year old and I don't think I'll ever be where I was pre-baby.

What do you think about the mismatch of labor and employment laws and the modern nature of our economy after the technological boom? Am I the only one who thinks (and am I crazy to think) there are some benefits to workers from the gig economy, and it might be best long term to pass new employment laws to ensure worker protections while maintaining these benefits instead of trying to shove the current gig economy back into the 1960s? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Working from home for eight months has definitely hanged my body shape and not for the better!
