When my grandpa had a stroke I took FMLA and took off several weeks to go be with him in the hospital. I am not sure how your job is set up but mine I didn't have to worry about finding anyone to cover me. If you can take FMLA that will protect your job.

Normally it is as simple as notifying your supervisor and then following documented policy.

If you take leave, you should be fine. If you quit or lose your job then yes you risk losing your insurance coverage. They are options like cobra but that’s never great. So I would try to go on family extended leave so that way you’re still technically employed, and you don’t lose your benefits. Good luck to you.

I wouldn’t worry and would focus on your family. FMLA leave can cover this legally as well!
