Anyone here made the move back to a large law firm after being in-house? I spent 10 years in BigLaw and the last 6 in my specialty practice area in-house. How’d you make the move? Pros/cons? Happy now or regret it?

Someone on my team did this. He spent at least 10 years in-house and came back to the same group (after they moved firms). He seems happy.

We have an of counsel that did this, so I know it’s possible. Hard though. In-house teaches you different work coping skills. Not better or worse, just different. Your legal skills may be fine, but you’re used to corporate politics and productivity bullshit, not partnership politics and billable hour bullshit. They are different beasts.

I will never go back to billing ever again!

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed. You didn’t have to do shit on this matter, didn’t hear you complaining about my taking the lead and managing everything for you when that was happening. >.>

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing. Thanks in advance!

First year associate and I may barely hit 1500 this year. Requirement is 2000, though i know first and some second years at my firm don’t hit it.

I am a in a small specialist group who has 2 partners, and they both give me work. One of them said to not worry about my hours (though they do not know how low of a number i’m projected for). Haven’t asked the other.

Should I be concerned?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?
