Just was thinking about same thing. Underpaid... found that I do manage a lot of different things, systems, network, security with awareness trainings cloud, help desk, and still under 100k. Thinking about it managers or other roles...
sysadmins are perpetually fucked. Try applying for devops roles - it's basically a sysadmin with some coding added, but you get paid more because it's a buzzword.
It’s about marketable skills, having enough experience and negotiation skills. It’s that simple! Don’t over think it. Be patient. Your degree qualifies you for a chance to impress us. It entitles you to nothing. We don’t value paper. We value thought leadership. If you are making less than everyone in a tech role re-read this figure out where you are weak and improve. The only people making more are doctors, lawyers, CEO’s, some directors, maybe upper management. It’s certainly not everyone. You don’t top out on tech until about 200k, then you might have to manage some people or have significant oversight over accounts. Also keep in mind you will only go up in your career until you are basically incompetent. When you hit that point that’s the peak of your career. Some people it’s CEO some it’s working in fast food. Everyone tops out somewhere.
Lawyers on aggregate are making less but I see the point you were making.
Yo just apply to a start up. In the same boat. Just under a year at Accenture and realizing how stupidly underpaid we are (based on comp base rates for people from Strategy, etc). Our work is the only tangible thing making the company money and we’re losing out to these d bags with MBAs recycling the same slide deck every week. I’m out. Time to look into literally anyone else
That has not been my experience. Strategy MO seems to be focused on billable hours, not output. Lack of client communication and output has caused several escalations. Meanwhile, tech project in tandem is getting glowing reviews after spending weeks on rebuilding client trust after strategy damaged the relationship exponentially after years of billing hours with nothing to show for it. Also very difficult to attract talented developers to Accenture because our salary rates are significantly lower than what industry offers. Seems a bit unfair, right?
A1 said it best. Super frustrating that endlessly editing decks with slight modifications somehow makes double what implementing new systems makes 🤷🏻♂️
depends, tech consultants have higher pay than management consultants with certain firms
PwC this year— tech consulting is higher than mgmt consulting just due to market. Not the same the last 4 years, but sometimes tech is higher than consulting.
🤣 get into a high demand tech skill and you’ll make more than the slide jockeys. I do 😜💵💵💵💵
you are going to have to escalate and push. continually let your account team know that you want a significant promotion or need to move on. be prepared to find your replacement from outside.
If they are not in a profit center of the company they will tend to make less. If you are tech you should work for a tech company.
I don’t want to do tech honestly. I’d rather try and move
May be biased but cyber ALWAYS needs more people with dev backgrounds, generally pays better than most tech consulting jobs, and can be very engaging and challenging work.
Outside of the prestigious strategy shops
C2 is more than a little condescending
The key to compensation in tech is working for a company where your skills are considered unique rather than commodity. The global outsourcing move has, IMHO, depressed the value of many tech skills. But if you can demonstrate that you are more valuable than the offshore resource that they pay significantly less for, you will be paid more (though it takes either a champion in your current company, or jumping companies, to realize that increase).
Not always true lol?
I’m “staff” taking home more than directors
I didn't know that I was. Meh I live comfortably so not really bothered
Change jobs. You’ll make more at a startup
Supply and command.
