Anyone recover from a bad reputation? I was ashit head for about 3 years after law school. Was fired once, got a DUI, had a few interviews where my depression was speaking for me, but sorted myself out and got a good job where my coworkers value my contributions and I grew up. The good job may lay me off in the future because of budget cuts that are beyond my control. I'm worried that I will reenter the market and have to fight against my bad reputation, anybody have inspiration for me?

All it takes is one place to say yes. Sounds like you have a great story so just get out there and network

You got this. Seems like you own it.

You’re doing well, friend! Everyone’s got a past. Keep up the good work

You are doing the right thing by owning it. If your past comes up in an interview, or elsewhere, take it head on. “I was an ass. It took a while, but I got through it. I grew up and am a really different person than I was back then, and I think my work show it.”

And, if you happen to encounter someone that you screwed over or were awful to and didn’t deserve it, apologize to them. Costs you nothing but will make a big impact on how they see and remember you.

Agree with this. I had a very checkered pass from college. First law firm employer asked about a very poor semester in my undergrad, owned up about the situation. I’m doing well now, but unfortunately always relate back to my younger years. It’s tough, but people typically understand circumstances and whatever is going on in your head is likely not how other people will view you.

Hang in there. We all need a second chance.

There are repercussions for your actions. Sounds like you’re learning that now

Yeah I have a similar story. It took me a while to find a new firm that was supportive and gave me a chance. And I’m doing well!

Hi All,

I recently obtained my law degree and currently work for a BigLaw law firm as an assistant. I want to make the transition to the firm’s Litigation department because I want to practice international arbitration. How do I approach my HR department as well as the litigation bosses about transitioning to litigation? Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

Have interviews set up at FAANG co and getting good signals, for a position that was posted widely (all across US) but not remote. Haven’t broached the subject of location yet. Would you (1) early on clearly state that you’re not open to relocation but that you would be open to visiting a big office once or twice a month; (2) not say anything now and wait to get an offer and ask for an exemption; or (3) something else?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

What is the scoop on med mal defense vs. plaintiff work? Is defense more respected by other practice areas if I were to switch somewhere else later?

I applied to a position that brands itself as civil litigation and apparently the role is med mal defense. Not sure what to go by but would like to do a little research before I call them back.
