You're right about public transportation, it should really be a priority. But what usually happens is people in power won't fund it properly, and won't expand it so it's really usable for more people. And then they denounce it for not being great and not being popular. It's maddening.
It’s indeed maddening haha I am just trying to figure out how places like NY, CHI, Philly got it to be better than where we are 😭
Yeah, I absolutely love Marta. Wish it had more coverage but that comes down to decisions we make 🤷🏻♂️
If it’s available / feasible for my journey, it’s usually my first choice of transit. I especially prefer it to/from the airport. I think way easier than dealing with Uber @ ATL + traffic.
lol I haven’t worn a Deloitte shirt on Marta recently but keep an eye out, OP 😉
If it was faster than driving and I worked decent not late hours, I would take it to work.
My old job commute was from Buckhead to Decatur. It took 20 min longer on train (not including walking) and I often worked until 9pm so I never took it (I'm a woman).
@author it wasnt the walk ability. Both my homes were a 5 minute walk (1 Buckhead station and 1 Brookhaven station). But I had to switch trains in 5 points and that's where it took so much longer.
The train itself gets pretty sketchy. I try to sit right behind the conductor if I'm by myself. But there's a few times I've gotten off the train and called an Uber because of crazy people on the train.
Half of the people in my dept. take Marta
Depends on the area and the route, but my dept specifically I see a group live in the same area and because there is limited route - they ended up going on the same bus every-time
Pro
Would take Marta more if it actually covered a reasonable area. I would have to drive 25-35 mins just to get to a station which defeats the purpose. Atlanta and the surrounding areas were built on a foundation of racism and segregation which is why we have highways and streets that make no sense, no sidewalks in so many places, and no sufficient public transit. It is by design. As the demographics change over time we may see some improvement but unlikely to happen for at least a decade or more.
Depends on route. When I used to live in the city 3-4 stops away, heck yes. If you have to drive to an end Marta station like Doraville for daily commute, then no. It’s exhausting and long.
I used to be a big believer in Marta, but now I think it’s horribly run and a money pit. The fact that they keep asking for more money while nothing changes.
We don’t have anywhere near the population density of NY to support a system at that level. MARTA also doesn’t do itself any favors by non-stop “single tracking” for a small line that apparently is always in need of repair. So they run trains every 20 minutes. In 20 minutes I can halfway down the line or already where I want to be.
