Fair point. I see where you are coming from. I still think you should have structured career and life goals. Pursue an opportunity that allows you to do both.
Not everyone has to gun for partner. Just make sure that you're setting yourself up to financially provide for your children in the way you want. Love is always best, but love doesn't pay for braces or tuition.
I have a close friend who had to give up his cushy but relatively low paying industry job and scramble back to public when his kid was born with developmental disabilities. The short of it was that he and his wife were going to need more money in the long term and his gig didn't really promote from within.
Don't look at pay. Look at the job, ask yourself, do you see yourself working for the government, is it something that interests you, ask them about what the work life balance is etc. Don't chase $, I say follow your goals.
Money is only part of the equation. My wife and I want to start a family soon and I think I’ve realized what the important things in life are. Sure I can have these big career aspirations, but it takes me away from what’s important in life. This job will be a great work life balance and has other great benefits. My goal is to be around when my kids are growing up, and I think this is a necessary step. I’m done with career goals.
