Are administrative things like shelling discovery responses and formatting hard for anyone else? My spatial sense is awful and these things don’t come naturally to me. I’m constantly chewed out on formatting. My firm is understaffed and while some practice groups claim they never have to shell their own stuff, others have less support and are forced to do administrative work. I’m in the latter group and my coworkers don’t seem to mind shelling their own discovery responses.

Not that I mind exactly, but this is the kind of work that should have been automated so long ago it blows my mind we still spend hours doing it. It’s (mostly) not even legal work, it’s just clicking buttons in Microsoft Word

I know right? My brother in law is a software engineer and I told him that he could be a multimillionaire if he perfected a decent automated system for things like shelling and styles and certificates of service. All of these tech companies are trying to shill us big picture solutions when we just need the basics lol.

To be fair, I think some companies have products out that address this issue but I don’t know how good they are…

No. I use them to kickstart a task and build momentum (but with a strict timer on how long I can tinker). Use the format painter button, it’s your friend.

To make things easier on yourself, ask for a draft done by a coworker that has been previously used/approved so you aren’t starting from scratch and then change what’s needed. It’s a bit time-consuming but at least it’s billable. Then save that draft and use it as a template for future cases.

Hi all. I just received an offer for $130k and will be eligible for about 29,000 shares of stock options. The vesting schedule is 1 year and then quarterly thereafter.

"People just want it to work" is a thing clients have said about the product the company I work for makes. It's true. And it's all over. Anyone else feel this way? Has Agile worked for you and your clients?

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. When I try to work, I feel like I can barely hold a thought in my mind before I get the “wait, what am I doing again?” feeling. I just want to know, I’m not the only one that struggled this week to do any work, right?

One of the things that my ADD coach helped me with was realizing that I wasn’t prioritizing activities that help me feel recharged. Between work and home responsibilities, I was just burnt out and overwhelmed.

So now when I start to get burned out I focus on reducing auditory overwhelm, getting outside, listen to music, get comfortable, read a fun book, etc.

As we’re heading into the weekend, what are some things you do to recharge and give yourself a break?

New midlevel associate at a big law firm and still ramping up. I’m having a lot of trouble tackling small or discrete tasks that are either administrative in nature or otherwise because I don’t have a full plate and something to focus on. I feel bad stopping in the middle of the day and doing something else (e.g. watching tv)since I’m already not billing many hours, but my brain feels all over the place and think that may be the only solution. Anyone have exp. with this or advice?

I broke my foot a few weeks ago and sitting at my desk in a cast is incredibly uncomfortable still. But, the work I do can’t really be done from the couch as there is too much paperwork involved that I prefer to physically spread out. I am a true solo. So, I am my only accountability. I’m usually pretty good about getting going, but I’m stalled out. Send me some tough love to get me going today.

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.
