Are all professionals clueless of what they are doing? Or is it just a consultant issue?

Mostly just consultants.

Source: industry hire in consulting. I'd like to think I was at least somewhat useful before I joined consulting.

If your experience has been anything like mine so far, it's kind of like progressing in your old role but now with a sleazy con artist meets overworked indentured servant twist.

Consultants are more clueless. Consultants like to think that professionals don’t know what they are doing but it’s the other way around.

Actually C1, the proper vernacular is "It depends."

Are you me OP?

I have no idea what I’m doing

Just consultants

I don’t think incompetence is confined to roles or industries

How is incompetency coming here!?

I think it depends on the job. People who are responsible for a vast, vast web of topics are more likely to be clueless, but people who are responsible for less are more likely to know what they’re doing. I think tax is a great example of this. In industry, the tax people can be quite knowledgeable because they are responsible for THAT firm’s specific tax picture. It’s more or less the same filings and topics and problems every year. You can learn it. But take that same person and put him in a public accounting job, where his clients can present him with tax problems from all 50 states on topics he’s never seen before, on states he’s never dealt with before, and they DO do that, then that same person is more likely to have no idea. So I’d say it depends more on the job and industry

Child care when traveling for work should be expensable… also dog boarding… I cannot get over how things like first class seats and any meals for higher ups, dry cleaning, ubers/lyfts over cheaper options, etc. all are expensable but essential costs you need to foot when traveling like child care and dog boarding are not expensable. I wish we had a per diem like allotment rather than actual costs so we could use money left over if we choose cheaper options so we could use the money we save
