Oh sure anything else sweetie? We’d hate for you to actually use any of your earnings!

CIMS1 - right. And that’s what your salary is for. You know, the money they’re already giving you to be used however you choose to live your life.

Real-time look at me explaining to a potential client that, yes, we are legitimate grownup consultants who can help them solve complicated issues, and yes, they will need to pay for one of my senior associate’s childcare and dog boarding.
Rising Star
Honest question SM4, why would the client have to pay rather than the firm (or worst case, the partner’s fat margin on the engagement)?

While OP’s post feels outlandish, pause and think. Companies continues to use labor force to drive their profitability, at the cost of time the same workforce would spend on child care. The fact that there is ZERO contribution from companies into improving/compensating for child care infrastructure is simply unsustainable.

Defensive? I’m making fun of you champ
Seems weird that people don’t support this. Wouldn’t you want your child/dog care paid for if you suddenly had to travel for work?
Why don't you get on a federal long term project, and stay local? I know people who never travel. Maybe once a year. They do have to go to client site but not every day. They do go to the office but not every day.
Where do you live?

I don’t have kids or a dog (by choice). So do I get to just keep my allotment as extra earnings?
Chief
There you go, you’ve just figured out why firms don’t do this.
They don’t want you to take worse routes. They don’t want you to connect or spend more time on an airplane or risk not getting where you need to be. They want you to get where you’re going. This is why no one does this. No one wants to deal with having the associate not arrive for a meeting they need to cover because they were trying to pocket $45 by flying Spirit connecting through Buffalo NY.
I left consulting because taking care of a young child while traveling often for work is absolute nightmare. It has financial, emotional and mental cost. Not sure people with no child can relate but that doesn’t mean your company has to pay for it, if this isn’t working for you leave consulting and find a no travel/full remote job
So true! The more amenities they give us the more they can expect us to work (why do you think google serves dinner at 6PM - to keep people on campus working).
Chief
What are they paying you all the money for then? It’s surely not value provided.
Having pets and children is your choice…
Also what if the travel costs more than your suggested per diem allotment? Would you pay the difference?

Do you feel the same way about parental leave?

OP
Go take a pay cut and work in an industry that doesn’t travel. Travel expectation are clearly laid out in every job posting.
Maybe you should reconsider being in a role that requires travel.
OP, I’m single with no kids and no dog. I don’t have a dog *because* I travel 50% of the time and I can’t afford the kind of care I would want for a dog. I could have been one of those people who got a “COVID dog” to keep me company 2 years ago, but I knew my job would eventually require me to travel again. It would be terribly disruptive for a pup, so I made the conscious choice not to do it. I love dogs, foster for 2 different rescues when I know I’ll be home for more than a week at a time, and play with my friends’ dogs when they let me, but I won’t get one of my own.
Nothing you can do about the kids if they’re really young right now, but as they get a bit older you can arrange for sleepovers at friends’ houses for a couple of nights or perhaps get an au pair (less expensive than a nanny)…or get a job that doesn’t require travel!
EY covers this, up to $800/year. We have some pretty great perks.
Does EY work with Salesforce if so send that referral link!
Idk man. I get where you're coming from but this is the nature of the work. I have a partner, pets, and family too. You can choose to take a pay cut and work elsewhere. Also, your overpaid salary should be more than enough to cover these expenses. Firms are not here to pay for a kid you chose to have. I feel most consultants are spoiled. We already get tons of benefits and subsidies for WHM, well-being, etc. The main issue is that- even if they were to pay for these things, where would it stop. What if you choose to have 2 more kids or 2 more dogs? An allocation of expenses towards this will be difficult to balance. Will employees without kids be compensated for not having these accommodations?
I hear you OP. Everyone says kids are a choice and I agree but sometimes kids can be sick, have a disability or medical conditions. I didn’t choose for my child to have special needs, yet the hate from people is unbelievable.
Having a kid shouldn’t be a limiting factor in getting a promotion or being able to work in consulting but it really is. People also wonder why women have a harder time leveling up when they are left with the expectation (on average) to take care of the kid since the company they are working for won’t help.
Did you leave out gentlemen’s club expenses?

They pay for birth control, so problem solved.
I think that’s sort of fair
Would this even be allowed under IRS fringe benefits?

I don’t want any of these stupid benefits.
I want money only. Period ahh, perilous ugh.
Start your own firm. That's the only way to get what you want.
