Like other people said, it’s worth it if you genuinely care about brands and image.
For me it isn’t, and I personally buy unbranded bags from local artisan leather crafters. The price is less, the quality is usually great, and they’re local so if I ever need a repair, I can just call them and drop it off a few blocks away. And I have been able to ask them for custom pieces before. Like if I want a specific shape or feature on a bag.
For imposter syndrome, you should make a list of things you like/want and consider if you actually like each item or if you like it because other people like it. Note the items/qualities that you actually like in a bag or any style purchase, and align your decisions to that. If you’re doing it for you and you alone, you don’t need to impress anyone else
Thanks for sharing. I love local artisans too.

It takes more than a bag. Then comes the shoes, clothing, outer-wear, car, home, vacations, jewelry, never ending if you are doing this for image. Might as well start buying pieces now. For me? Rule of thumb: wealth is silent.
If you like it and can afford it, then get it. This is your life. Enjoy it
We’re in a recession
Huge difference btwn Birkin and, like, Celine and again Tory Burch/Coach/Kate Spade. To me, a Birkin is not worth it. A Celine/YSL/Gucci/Chloe is a milestone birthday thing (rare - I have two). Anything under 500$ is reasonable if you’re going for quality.
If you are on the fence about it have you ever considered trying the Real Real? I don’t know how you feel about resale, but I enjoy super high end things but don’t want to sell my first born for them 🤣😉.
I’ve bought a couple high-end designer things from there, and had a really great experience. They thoroughly inspected and verify everything that comes in.
It might be a good place to start and work up to something new at full price.
And honestly, no one knows unless you say something 😉 but really, if you want to splurge on something for you and you have the means to do it… then do it.
Start out buying pieces that are versatile and don't be afraid to actually use them!
Depends on the bag. Many Chanel or Hermes bags are worth more on the resale market. (Much like watches). The ones really worth money are challenging to get and not available to everyone regardless of bank account. There are some excellent sites that give tips and show you how to shop for the right pieces and which bags hold or increase in value the most. Will you make as much as you would in real estate…Hard no. Is it a “fun” way to enjoy beautiful things and have a way to get your money back or trade and get something new … yes. If some people can risk cash on gambling or cars… a purse isn’t the worst place to toss some money.
“It’s your money. Use it when you need it!”
Jk. But for real. Ain’t nothing wrong with getting a nice investment piece. If you wanna have that one or two lux bags to slap on your shoulder when you stepping out. Go for it.
My question is why do you want the designer bag? Status? Or because you actually love the product?
Go for it
As a visual artist I agree with Grant Thornton 1, 100%.
If you want to look stylish, thoughtful, authentic, chic, and or original, please do seek out original artisans for your bags. If possible seek out artists from your local community hometown, alma mater etc.
You could have a few amazing pieces of long lasting, hand crafted, luxury bags but actual artisans instead of a few mass produced expensive luxury brand name bags.
I don’t like to spend that much, but I do have 2 Chloe Marcies that I love to pieces. I’m good on bags until one of them falls apart.

The only bags that are worth it are the ones the hold/appreciate in value. Classic chanel, Prada, and Berlin styles are on the table. None of the trendy stuff though
Birkins are a genuine investment. The rest are just if you care about brands.
I feel you with the MK and Coach brands. Hermes has a huge market for pre-owned bags, but I would say only Birkins and some Kellys retained better resale value. YSL is a completely different tier and is a lot more affordable. Get a few bags in the 4digit range will give you a very good look. Birkin and Kelly’s are guaranteed 5digits for any leather/color that looks nice. Don’t even feel bad. You gotta have something for yourself. If you’re worried about “investment” then buy watches that have a higher resale in general than bags. Think Rolex, Cartier, Bulgari.
One thing I learned was that for some professions it definitely can be an investment. It’s a part of creating your brand identity. Buying a high end handbag, watch, shoes and sunglasses can help presentation with clients. Even if you only own the one, wear it when you meet an important client you want to impress.
Please read Darren Hardy’s book “The Compound Effect.” Your money now, is worth so much more in the years to come. Wasting money on Frivolous things is keeping you working longer. Besides, people should like you for you, not your accessories!
There’s a guy in TikTok who tears apart designer bags to deduce the quality of material + craftsmanship and whether it’s worth the price tag. I can tell you that a lot of those super expensive luxury brands aren’t it. Even Coach, which costs significantly less, has better quality.
Most of those Birkin, Hermes, etc. bags are ugly af anyway, including many of the classic designs that are supposed to be timeless.

What about Goyard? Those are nice and not all that expensive. Even better, the fakes are the same as the real thing (almost). My mom had a real and a fake she bought for fun/as a knock around bag.
Would also look at real real.
