I hate to say it, but I don’t know that there is such a thing. I had family that worked at one of those national brands years ago, and they went through a huge layoff. Smaller places you won’t hear about as often, but still happen. Take whatever seems the most stable, just understand there is never a guarantee.
Wanting a job that can't be lost in a bad economy is a good strategy so far as it goes. To be really honest, I'm not sure such a thing exists. Big firms will sometimes swing a scythe through their workforce and lay off what seems like entire departments. If the economy continues with its current uncertainty, smaller companies will also revert to extreme cost cutting. The best approach is to seek out the work you find interesting, as there's really no way of knowing where security may be located.
There is more job security at a mutual, especially a profitable mutual. There are never any guarantees.
