As a white Latina I’d like to add my two cents 😊 The history of Latin America as it pertains to race is very similar to North America. Native Americans and Blacks were enslaved, but by the Spanish, instead of the English. Overall white is still a color of “privilege”
I’m also much more “white” (my skin is literally lighter) than both of my parents. While people never “suspect” I’m not from here, it’s really obvious with my parents, that they’re not “white”. They also speak English with heavy accents. My entire family is like this. Some are white some are brown...some are darker shades of brown 😂 skin color is nuanced, ya know?
However as an immigrant especially a we definitely have different experiences than white Americans. Whiteness does not necessarily save us from discrimination. People said nasty things to my parents in front of me, kids said things and called me some not so nice things at school (I didn’t speak English when we first came here, and kids can be pretty mean). My parents were not always treated as equals at work. Once a store clerk at Macy’s told my mom the champagne glasses she was looking at were “not for people like her”.
Point is we’re white, but I do think we experience things differently than white Americans, and today “white” seems to imply American. We also have big cultural differences that can often lead to “identity crises” for lack of a better word. I was recently reminded to check my white privilege. I’m not a huge fan of the labels but I’m very very proud of being Latina, and admitedly was a bit bummed when my company did the #pulluporshutup thing on Instagram (where you break down the diversity of your company) and said they had 0 Latinos/Hispanics (but they promise to do better when it comes to hiring minorities!) 🙃
This was an inspiring story. You don’t need to be brown to be discriminated against! (I am accusing you of playing the victim card. White is a colour too)
B/c of my fair skin I do not think POC is an appropriate label, not to me but for actual visible POC. However I do refer to myself as “white passing” as my dna is 50% spanish, 25% arawak and 25% western african. Depending on where I am in the US I either blend in completely or stand out like a sore thumb (eg. Southern states). Just my POV.

I think if you marginalize race at all your friends racist and it’s never going to stop until we educate people how to control their bias. Seriously why go look for the logic in racism?
A white latino with a white sounding name is treated very differently than a white latino with a latino sounding name..... just saying

It’s complicated. I am Latina but appear white (I’m half Salvadoran and half White). Latina isn’t a race though and I don’t consider myself (nor do I pass for) a Person of Color, and most people don’t even realize I’m in the minority as a Latina.

Depends on your experience and definition of people of color, when white Latinos are treated like POC by White Americans i can see how some would identify as POC. Also Latino families are much more diverse than people would expect, you can easily find families with several different skin tones and facial features
I definitely fall into transparent category 😂especially in winter. People used to ask me if I “got really tan in the summer cause I was Colombian” . I do not 😩

Latino identity is pretty complex since we’re all mixed to a certain extent. But to the question of POC, it’s an even more complicated answer. I know a lot of whiter Latinos, including my family, that view the POC meaning to not be a literal shade of color but instead a cultural identity. There’s a lot of Latinos in this country regardless of their skin color that get discriminated due to xenophobia. White Latinos do have more privilege non-white Latinos for sure though

Idk about that I’ve been told by a “white liberal” to check my white privilege, even though I didn’t speak English when I came here and got bullied for it 😂 when I tell people I’m Latina they say “but you look white”. My personal opinion - it doesn’t matter. Why all the labels? Do you.

POC usually refers to anyone who is not North American or European Caucasians.
So it all depends on the context as to why you are asking the question.

The United Nation's Geoscheme places Mexico in Central America not North America.
There are even some Dominicans ans Puerto ricans and Mexicans who consider themselves white latino...

D2, that happens. Ethnicities are defined by customs, language, food preferences, values, and culture in general.
Hispanics gave been on the wrong end of discrimination because either their ethnicity or their race. Or both.
If your Salvadoran ancentry has more of the European side you don't have to worry about race. And depending on how strongly you identify with hispanic cultural roots, you may not be easily identified as a target for ethnicity driven discrimination either. Thats good, less obstacles to overcome on your day to day.

Agree with OP but I rarely get to that second level of reasoning. Most times the crap I put up with as a Hispanic is enough.
