Yes, the mpls agency scene is a club. Once you’re in, you’re in, no matter how lazy and bad you’ve gotten at your job. I’ve never seen more people fail upwards, while dragging their ‘bros’ with them.
I believe it…
This bowl couldn’t be a more accurate representation of the actual MInneapolis ad scene. Insular AF.
I’ve been living here for 6 years. Never been able to get hired by anyone here, not even for freelance. It has actually been easier to get freelance gigs from coastal agencies and a remote FT job for a Chicago agency, while people here in town pass on me.
Why would anyone need to network if they just hire their friends?
@SM Well, larger cities, have industries whose populations aren’t 100% made up of natives. If you work at an agency in LA, very few people will actually be from LA. And even the ones who are from CA, would be from different parts of the states. Same in NY. To a lesser extent in Chicago, but similar. Larger cities have floating populations and lots of migrants from other states/countries. The people hiring at agencies know this and don’t rely on their very hyper local network to fill vacancies. They hire… well, strangers most of the time, based on their actual qualifications and books. Of course people sometimes hire friends or acquaintances or people who were recommended as well, but the network of these people many times is much larger than the people they went to high school or college with or their last agency. People here tend to stay decades in one place. Once they get a job, they hang on to it with their teeth and the ad community itself is so tiny.
Don’t get me wrong, people are “nice” and polite about it, but they gatekeep the shit out of jobs.
And yeah, very self important, as CD1 said. I find it hard to believe that if I’m good enough to be hired by agencies in both coasts and Chicago and Texas (as well as smaller markets I’ve lived in) I’m somehow not good enough to even get an interview here most times.
The one time I actually did a bit of freelance for CMV, was because my creative partner in TX, had worked with heir CCO at some point earlier in his career and their CCO hired us. So it really had nothing to do with me being in MN. I could’ve been elsewhere, for all he cared.
CD1 where you at?
Still here wondering when this bowl will come alive.
Um… sure
Nope! Applied for a job at Costco today…
