I’m fine with it. It’s a good investment in the city. This past weekend, Uptown was swamped by a big concert and I got the sense that many people came from out of town so that helps tourism in a city that doesn’t have many tourist attractions. And that’s not even counting the sports teams that come play there and might bring some visiting fans. If you read some of the articles about it, other cities like Nashville and Jacksonville and are also putting up decent money from renovations for their NFL teams and those cities while smaller are also bigger tourist draws. It seems like it is the norm.
Schools, it should all go to schools. This is dumb
This is very fair!
Hate giving money to billionaires but the stadium also brings other events to Charlotte which brings revenue to hotels and restaurants. I’m not even a sportsball fan. Losing the team means maintenance is a city expense(?) and attracting a new team would probably require the same upgrade costs or more. But then, does another city want the Panthers?
Google BoA stadium and there are several articles (with various dollar amounts) listing the renovations and upgrades. One article says it’s the first major renovation since 1996. But I know they had some “minor” renovations over the years. But yeah I wonder what 800m gets you
I don't love it, but this is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the other idea that had been swirling — redeveloping the Foundry land (pictured) for an entirely new stadium complex then redeveloping the current stadium footprint into an entertainment district. That would've easily flirted with $2B and a much larger cost to the city. (Article details it better).
None of the upgrades would make me want to go to an event any more than I'm drawn right now, but 🤷🏾♂️.
It's at least getting more use with CLTFC and more concerts...even if the turf is worse for the athletes.

I agree that the stadium brings value to the city, but I also think we're being asked to shoulder too much of the renovation costs. Should be more like 60/40 instead of 80/20.
Also, it’s hospitality and hotel taxes. So unless you are staying in a hotel, it’s not “your taxes”. It’s mostly visitors and convention goers. But I’d rather see light rail from the airport.
I’m honestly pretty mad about this. My hard earned tax dollars are going to support a team that’s owned by a billionaire that can afford to pay for the upgrades. I’d rather my tax money go to public infrastructure to fix problems us normal people in CLT face (terrible roads, lack of public transport, mostly horrible public education, etc).
Like I said before, legally, hospitality taxes can’t be used for education or public transportation.
I just want though if they’re gonna make that large of an investment to build a damn dome so we can host final four, Super Bowl, NCAA matches, large scale events
The lack of hospitality infrastructure is a much bigger deal than the lack of a dome, although an indoor stadium would certainly give us a boost. Charlotte has successfully hosted the DNC, RNC, NBA All-Star Game, and the NCAA Tournament (not the final four).
Dome is a problem, but far from THE problem. The bigger problem is that the NFL requires so much more for the super bowl.
