Interesting. I never thought of that, how/if copywriters are hired specifically for one language and a translation would expand beyond that.

If my job description does not include translation responsibilities I refuse to do it without compensation. I think of it as the same thing as a copy writer being asked to build a website. That’s scope creep and the more it’s allowed the worse it gets.
I hate being asked to do translation work. I don’t mind volunteering for it if I have bandwidth, and if I see it can help a team or initiative in a pinch.
It needs to be informally and not for wide consumption, though. I’ve been assigned translation duties by higher-ups who have mistaken my ethnicity for proof that I can function as well as a professional translator with decades of experience under their belt, and it’s always awkward to have to decline and explain that I can wing a translation here or there if needed, but I’m not Shakespeare and I make human mistakes.

That’s a whole other part of the issue right there. It’s another form of discrimination at work in my opinion. Because if you CANT do it, then they look at you in a negative fashion. It’s yet another thing that people of color at work that most white people do not.
I am multilingual but I am not generally asked to do translation work. That might be because I work at an agency and everything needs to be scoped and paid for, so there's less incentive for the agency to make me do a whole workstreams for free for clients. I think the way you're doing it is right. Translation is a skill. It'd be like asking a copywriter to do graphic design.

Boom. That’s it. Right there. Completely agree.
