McKinsey & Company Just had the first of my final round interviews with McKinsey & Company. A bit taken aback as the interviewer specifically asked me to share a PEI story that I have not shared with the previous round interviewers. I have not heard of other case partners who had the same experience and they were usually able to share the same stories as they did in the first round. Any insights on this? Thanks much!

Hi new mama.
I hope you know that juggling parenthood and a full time job in a creative field with lots of subjectivity is an incredible task.
Yes I have gotten feedback like that before.
“Why does this look off?”
“This doesn’t look so designed”
“Can we do something to make this look tighter”
All of that is normal.
It could be 3 things:
1- The client has no idea what they’re talking about. And they just want to show that they’re smart and understand design.
2- The client has something in mind they can’t fully articulate. Something isn’t perfectly matching the visual they have in mind. In this case, your alignment/spacing may be fine but the client is just poking holes trying to match your design to their mental visual.
3- The client is actually right. Your layout on this particular project wasn’t perfect. The client has a good eye and noticed you were off your game with that one. Doesn’t mean you don’t know how to design. You’ve been on mat leave, probably designing less than pre-baby. You just need a couple reps to get your eye sharp again.
So my advice, take it in stride. You have nothing to worry about :)

It’s normal to feel rusty when you come back.
Think of anything else in life. If you take time away, coming back is rough.
But you can do this. You’ve got it!
