I have always followed the old “never say no” to work standard. I have deprioritized nonbillable tasks and currently have a lot of nonbillable work to do that I probably will not get to until/unless prompted. But maybe instead of saying no, can you delegate the work to a paralegal or legal assistant? If not and you do just say no, good luck and please let me know how it goes!
So many factors to go into this. Too hard to answer without so much more info. I'd just let them know what you are currently working on and say that task is not billable and the firm will lose money if i you have to redirect your attention. If they still insist you do it, do it. Then hit up a recruiter. Lol
I would not turn it down. The same goes for anything you are assigned really as a junior if you have ambition to move up. I would have a conversation as others mentioned about your workload and how that may be pushed to the back burner
