There are plenty of behind-the-scenes writing roles. That being said, I think most people get some kind of anxiety before interviewing, and just because you aren’t “like” the others, doesn’t mean you can’t do an excellent job at it.
Agree so much. Everyone has different strengths, and playing to those will help so much more than trying to be like somebody else.
I really relate to this. I’m on the quieter side too, and it used to make me feel like I didn’t belong. What helped me was realising good reporting isn’t about being loud, it’s about listening well and asking thoughtful questions.
There's more than one way to be a journalist. I think interviewing gets easier the more you do it, but it's always a bit nerve-wracking.
Yeah, you do become comfortable the more you do. I remember saying this to a friend who works in the same industry but has a different outlet. She admitted she felt the same but you wouldn't think it. I think a lot more people fake confidence than you think.

When I'm not on duty, I'm probably the most in-the-background person you'll ever meet.
But when I'm at work, when I'm doing the interviews and taking the photos, etc., I'm in charge of that scene.
I used to have to write all my questions down, and prepare before making a phone call... and I won't lie - when I'm walking up to random people on the street, sometimes I still have to hold back tears from the anxiety of it all, the fear of rejection. Oh, the horror! But honestly, I think there are MANY of us who are quite shy just like you, and that's okay. It'll get better.
