I wished I knew:
1. Being able to explain your valuation logic and assumptions in simple terms so that clients/lawyers/courts can follow is a much more valuable skill than being as analytically rigorous as possible.
2. You should avoid overengineering your models at a quite high cost of flexibility etc if needed.
3. Proper communication/coordination/self- and team management on the project is a lot more important than technical knowledge which in most cases can be acquired after 2-3 hours on google max (valuation is not rocket science at the risk of stating the obvious)
Favorite parts:
1. Much of the work is quite intellectually stimulating and nonstandard (if you do different types of projects including complex valuations/disputes and not only standard projects like PPA that is)
2. You usually (though not always) do honest analysis and not just fudge numbers to fit a clients idea of value.
3. Work-Life balance is quite decent, not 9-to-5 but a far cry from IB hours.
What sucks:
1. Clients wanting to have numbers immediately, sometimes even before they send any piece of information like business plan (!)
2. Clients not understanding that valuation is not a formula where you can put in 3 parameters and you have a one „correct“ number of value.
3. You usually „pay“ for better work-life balance by having a lot lower comp than IB.
(Of course all of the above is subjective and relates to my experience only)
