My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

For things that just take me longer than I think they should (like locating a file or generating a document etc) but it’s normal for our firm, I bill it as part of the time needed to complete my task. If it’s something like a system/program crash, or me getting training, or time to fix my system after getting “upgrades” to my computer, or me making a mistake in a process that ends up taking a lot of extra time, I put that in nonbillable.

I do wish the firm had a specific billing code for nonbillable time spent on technology-related issues/problems, but no one’s been asking me my thoughts on billing codes LOL 😂

We have a no Billables matter for IT issues but it’s not like anyone cares what you put in nonbillables...

My Context: work in tech, company has HQ in the Bay but I live in Canada. Single, no kids, 1 mortgage, no debts.

If you don’t have 8 hours of billable time a day, do you leave as is or do you fill in the gap with non-billable work? While I am in the office, I don’t always get the billable amount since I don’t have enough work. Seems like a waste of time to enter non-billable time just to fill in the gap but I also don’t want them to think I am not there and slacking off.

What’s the norm?

Partner staffed me, another mid & a junior on a deal. Plenty that junior could help with but it’s clear he’s not tracking the deal and not gonna do anything unless specifically asked. (He’s a 3rd or 4th year) Are we unreasonable for being frustrated he’s not taking more initiative if we haven’t specifically asked, or are juniors nowadays taking a “don’t speak unless spoken to” approach that we just need to get used to? I can’t tell if I’m a bad manager or if he’s just lazy.
