For things that just take me longer than I think they should (like locating a file or generating a document etc) but it’s normal for our firm, I bill it as part of the time needed to complete my task. If it’s something like a system/program crash, or me getting training, or time to fix my system after getting “upgrades” to my computer, or me making a mistake in a process that ends up taking a lot of extra time, I put that in nonbillable. I do wish the firm had a specific billing code for nonbillable time spent on technology-related issues/problems, but no one’s been asking me my thoughts on billing codes LOL 😂

Junior partner at a specialist boutique consulting firm (compete w/ MBB primarily in our verticals) with prior experience in PE on both deals and ops side, and corp dev. My career here is pretty stable and money is good enough without killing myself (500k+ cash) but I miss being an investor vs an advisor. Is there any path back to GE/PE at this stage? My gut says no unless it's a firm where I have a client relationship and I get lucky but hard to broach the subject given dynamics. Any advice?

Guys, how are you? I'm looking for some help. I recently started working for a new company. I've been reaching out to managers, directors, seniors, and the Resource Manager since Day 1 in order to get placed on projects. When I get on a call today I find out that all of my coworkers who started with me have billable hours of at least 40 hours per week. Meanwhile, I have yet to reach that number of hours yet. So, what should I do now? I've literally done my part to get staffed in projects.

What are your views on promotions — should they ALWAYS be driven by the employee (“I want a promotion. How do I make this happen?”) vs. the manager (“I think you’re ready to grow into a new role”)? I recently got a new manager who aligns with my career interests, but both of us are still under my previous manager who treats people as resources. I’m bitter about the upward progress of peers on other teams (w/ better managers), a combo of FOMO + feeling like I’ve failed myself.
