The higher you get, the better you have to be a politics - which is why I've decided to get out of leadership and move back into an individual contributor role. The best advice I can give is learn to pick your battles. Some of them aren't worth fighting.
Very true. And some times it isn’t politics. I currently work for a chauvinist. So know your enemy and remember it isn’t what you know it’s about what you can prove. Last piece of advice HR is not there for you.
100%. My current manager actively blocks me from growth and other positions.
You need to build your internal network and champions carefully to help overcome those who are against you (as a person or because of your gender or race or…). Be strategic and make the decision if you have the energy.
On the other side, some of the worst offenders I have had were female leaders who seemed to think to succeed they had to outdo what their male counterparts were doing or had done in the past. So if you chose to do the battle and climb, think about who you want to be when you get there and how you want others to see you.
You can’t change anyone; focus on what’s in your control. Professionalism and staying objective will get you farther than playing games. Stay focused on your job’s goal and act with integrity. In all cases, cover your ass and document your work thoroughly. Documentation (if you are professional) will appear as a best practice and not a threat.
We tend to work in small practices and people get to know you and can see your work + relationships. We all have a sense who is reliable, good at their jobs, has integrity. And we all have a sense who is playing games and politicking. Be honest with leaders; in my experience if you stay focused on the goals of the practice or client and make value-add recommendations, you won’t need to do any of the sneaky dirty political stuff. Be flexible and solution oriented. Integrity rules the day.
Be genuine in your leadership. Being a good human regardless of your role or title is what I strive for. Eventually blowing smoke and playing politics only lasts so long.
