I'm a single mom and have been job searching since I got laid off in March 2024. I cannot "throw in the towel" as you state above, and I'm looking at other industries. It's a challenge, and I do not think trying, wanting, NEEDING AND LANDING A JOB SHOULD BE THIS CHALLENGING. I do not have any answers, but please know that you are not alone.
I don’t think you have to take an all or nothing approach to it. You could start working a job unrelated to advertising while still looking for an ad gig. That said, I think if I ever hit a point where I’m unemployed for 12 or so straight months, I’ll probably seriously consider a hard pivot out of the industry.
That is the big question. I really don’t know. I’ve been trying to figure that out for a long time.
I get the feeling of wanting to give up but not sure what the next steops. I battle with this feelings myself. I have been looking at roles in marketing and social media management to expand my options
I hear you! If you are considering a pivot, start having informational conversations with industries you are interested - while you keep looking for jobs. What companies do you want to work for? Use LinkedIn to network your way to someone there so you can make connections and ask questions. (Do send a thank you email.) Those meetings will be helpful whether or not you stay in adland. You have nothing to lose in asking for a brief informational but everything to gain. Then when you land a job you can reach back out to those people, thank them for their support and let them know where you’ve gone. Honestly stay curious and aim to meet more people - you never know, you might meet a future client or a friend.

Four months? Stop crying,
try being laid off and making it to countless final rounds and being told somebody had more experience or they went with their buddy.
You are just starting compared to others
Such wonderful empathy. You're hurting and lashing out at others. Think about it.
I recently 🏳️ through in the towel. But my situation is kinda unique. I worked in finance, most of my adult life. Experienced an unexpected job loss in 2018. Out of work a little more than a year. Got desperate, took a job in retail, 3 years flew by. I struggled, to pivot back into in finance role.
I accepted another role in 2023 that just wasn't a good fit. Jan 2024 my mom passed away 😢
I've just had some personal and professional setbacks. And I am trying to get back on track. I am confident in my abilities. But certain circumstances and gaps in employment have just left me discouraged, and lacking self confidence. Which I think would improve if I actually got a job. But the market so competitive, im not great at selling myself and with my lack of recent experience I feel im at a disadvantage. And frankly I'm just tired of the physiological game these employers play when it comes to these jobs. Especially when you find out you wasted hours, days, weeks, applying for a job they want to under pay you for.
I feel like I'm being forced to change careers at this stage of my life. And it's unfortunate cause I feel I was Great at my job. I'm analytical, good with numbers, and people.
But after nearly a year and a half. I need a paying job. So I'm going back to retail PT for now.
My reasoning? Why should I commute 30 min to an hour away, take a reduction in position, take an entry level pay with my experience. 50k - 75k which will Net what 35k to 50k?
When I can go into retail, no experience or education requirements for a few dollars less. 🤔
Im just not happy about it cause this isnt what I wanted for myself.
