I’ve worked in data analytics consulting for over 6 years. Recently got an offer from a Tech firm after over a year of interview prep. I’m nervous cuz analytics consulting is VERY different from a product based company, and my only prep is for data science interviews, not any actual on the job experience. I would not exit at the director level. Comp is not in line with what I need. If I were you I would look for roles in the strategy org where you can gain ops experience but your strategy experience will be valued.
Obviously your comp requirements might be different than mine.
Then I would go
Take the step down, suck it up and then accelerate back up after 12-18 months.
Sadly so do I. We’ve tightened our belts - saved a lot as I was looking to exit and then have downgraded our lifestyle whilst I establish myself. Not going to lie - it’s hard. But at the same time I am building a good rep at my new industry company and after less than a year being considered for some substantial P&L ownership roles. It’s been humbling to go to industry, but by approaching it as a ‘I need to prove myself again’ I feel like I’m in a better long-term position.
Would the Director level be a significant pay cut?
