I learned both this past year. After effects is more challenging and more fun, the basics of premiere you can pick up easily along the way. I tried some online courses, but honestly the built in tutorials in each program were really good! Start there then turn to YouTube, that’s gotten me farther than I would have believed.
After Effects! Premiere Pro is pretty basic and you could figure it out (plus so many people I know in production swear by Final Cut Pro over Premiere). If you’ve used a bit of iMovie before then I don’t feel like it’s worth it to learn since you’ll have the basics. After Effects has the ability to do much of the Premiere Pro basic editing.
After Effects is the skill folks look for IMO. You can do so much with the ability to animate stuff. I used Lynda which is now LinkedIn Learning because they have practice files and if you’re not doing while watching I don’t think much will stick. YouTube tutorials are better when you have a specific thing you want to do and can search for it— there are so many tutorial online for any specifics! Best to get basics with a YouTube intro course if you don’t want to pay for LinkedIn Learning. Lots of people making good ad $$ off of AE tutorials so I’d be they’re pretty great quality and you can’t go wrong!!

Worth noting that if you have a public library card you probably have access to LinkedIn learning
Premiere is best for editing, as in, working alongside the director to shape a pile of footage into a cohesive story, so it’s more on the cinematography and creative side. After Effects is for production, more executional and getting into the weeds. It’s way more powerful. For freelance work, you’ll see a lot more opportunities with After Effects.

After effects.
Agree w above comments - After Effects for sure!
Just to set expectations here, You need to be very fluid in AE if you’re hoping to get gigs for that. Watching and doing a few tutorials mostly won’t cut it.
I think it’s depends on what ya want to do. Both are great and good skills to know. As CD2 said, Premiere is for editing, AE is mostly used for cool animation effects. They def go hand in hand.
But might I suggest DiVinci Resolve? It’s a Free all-in-one platform (edit/color/etc etc) that I’ve enjoyed.
Disclaimer: know premiere pretty well, have only done a few AE tutorials.
I would also recommend AE but ultimately what interests you more: filmmaking or design?

Adobe premiere first. Here’s your first tutorial. If you need any assistance or questions, feel free to dm me. https://youtu.be/fgH-aw7tkng

Depends on what you want, Premiere is more for video editing, AE is for motion graphics. That said, you can do most of what you do in Premiere using AE but not the other way round.
