Hell yes! How old are your kids? You only have a few years where Halloween is a great experience with them trick-or-treating before you are no longer cool to hang out with. Don’t waste that on a firm that will have you replaced before your body is even cold.
Push back
Projects have to be planned and client expectations managed. Halloween isn’t a holiday unless you make it one. Parenting requires a BUNCH of planning especially in a travel career. Is it hard to tell the PM your stay at home needs in advance?
My pressure comes from partners not clients or PMs and sometimes it's one two days notice of travel.
You need to book PTO to be assured of the day off. Just tell everyone you are on holiday that day and get out of traveling. Then work from home that day instead if you don’t want to take the full day off on other stuff if you have things to do.
No, just successful 30 something. Do what you feel is best, YMMV!
The key is just setting expectations ahead of time. If you’re asking to be remote for a day and you give a months notice it’s never a big deal. If you do it last minute it may require a conversation depending on what the needs from the team are at that point. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t have to travel but important to plan accordingly.
Because you just joined the project? Then I would just say it’s helpful to give a heads up on any planned time away as you are aware when joining. I agree you should be home on Halloween, just answering your question on how to push back.
I blocked the afternoon on my calendar. just say you have other commitments that afternoon and you can fly out first thing the next morning.
Unless there is something critical that week, there really shouldn’t be any going home Wednesday night or early on Thursday. You should definitely push back
OP,
If everything is critical, nothing is critical.
Life is too short. Be home for Halloween. I am flying home Wed.
