Honestly I’m in a similar situation, but I have turned it around to be an advantage. I stand out as a voice amongst the other creatives and has helped me get noticed with my not so “traditional” point of view.
Question: what's holding you back from being your true self? What do you feel you are missing ?
I held myself back for 10+ years. A lot of the founders and executive team is traditionally and I was nervous it would detour my growth with the company even though I never saw homophobia. It was all me. I wasn’t putting myself in this headspace if I wasn’t good enough to be myself and was afraid of being rejected. I recently came out to the entire company this past gay pride month and to my surprise those same traditional executives were the first ones to acknowledge me and the courage I had for being honest. You have to be comfortable with your environment and if you are not I would say it’s time to go. There are so many other places where you can and should feel accepted
I know how this feels and I’m sorry that you are experiencing this. I felt this way when I was still in the closet. Once I announced myself 😂 I was more confident in myself and my role and garnered a lot more respect than I thought I would.
Gay GCD checking in! We exist! Putting some things into motion to make it even more accepting, but I’d owe you the proof before I could advocate for our place.
Don’t lose hope.
And like others have said, please try to turn it into your advantage. The agency, whatever one you’re at, benefits from you, not the other way around.
If people are made “uncomfortable” by you being you, that’s their problem. Not yours.
Every day we’re visible is an act of protest for all of us. Meanwhile, we fishies here can be you’re support. 🖤🖤🖤
Only anecdotal, but I haven't found one agency that has a gay friendly creative department. Lots of "marketing" guys and account people, but I have usually been the only gay creative.
Publicis Groupe agencies. Lots of LGBTQ initiatives and from my experience very accepting of all people.
