Honestly, I’ve felt this way about the LGBTQA+ community since the early 2000s. It’s always focused on (usually white) gay men at the expense of others. A lot of advocacy doesn’t take intersectionality into consideration because what works for cis white gay men doesn’t always work for everyone else.
I think a lot of it has to do with gay men getting more visibility in general, and they tend to get more support from allies who are traditionally straight women. I’ve noticed a lot of straight women who claim to be an ally loves gay men but get uncomfortable around queer women.
I struggle with this too, I don’t know even how to say this the right way.
But even Pride campaigns for beauty / fashion / traditionally “womens” products tend to take this moment to center gay men breaking the mold of masculinity rather than also giving wlw representation.
idk if it’s not palatable, or if they just need to most recognized stereotype of what “gay” is so straight people recognize it at a glance and feel good about it? like, yay that they’re trying at all but it’s all just blah 😑
Men are perceived as the more lucrative potential market (which of course is not always true) when advertisers actually think about it, and when they don't stop to consider that LGBTQ+ is actually multiple markets (which is probably most of the time), subconscious bias takes over and they just write for will and grace or whatever.
