The rainbow doesn’t signify a party. But it does signify a community and the education and protest might fall second to the party in the perception of some... but IMHO the rainbow is needed even more when we can’t be literally out.
Very good point, I agree with you. I just had an experience a 3 or so years back in NYC.
I come from a country where it is illegal and dangerous to be gay. Growing up I didn’t know people like me existed, and if they did they were the ones that were being made fun of and talked about in the most dehumanizing terms. Fast forwards to the time when I make it out of my country and come out of the closet, live the life I had to hide from everyone. And the first parade where I will see, for the first time so many people on the spectrum being free and proud... instead I see wasted jocks holding their gf hair while they throw up and drag attention to themselves, brands brands brands that I know in my country support the antigay movements. It had no spirit of freedom, union, community, love... There are places where people get executed for being gay, and even today Hungary took away the rights of trans people, so we’re so far from over. Even the horrors that go on domestically. That’s why it made me skeptical, but visibility is also a step towards acceptance.

17% of LGBTQ+ people have been laid off, compared to 13% of the general population. 29% don’t have paid sick leave. Many are immunocompromised. These are the realities we need to bring to the forefront and that companies need to address to contribute to Pride in a meaningful way.
