Certainly the BA should have been brighter... but you/PM didn’t include basic onboarding like airport people mostly fly in to, hotel options, arrival times, etc.? That’s also poor planning
@M3 - (your point on alignment regardless of situation is duly noted)
You’re right - he actually is from a different country - however, I almost give less of an excuse because of that.... Like many of us, I’ve traveled abroad for work many times... and if it’s the first time on site, I’m always even MORE careful about airport, hotel, transportation than otherwise would be when traveling in my home country, because I make no assumptions about knowing my way around.
At any rate - at the time it was frustrating as hell, but hopefully will be able laugh at this (along with the BA) in the future
Check in hotel. Receptionist looked at me funny and gave me key and room #. Open door. Saw this big fat guy sitting on bed naked, eating pizza and watching TV. We both shocked out of our wits. Turned out we had the same exact name and receptionist made a mistake.
This is why I ALWAYS use the manual door lock
New consultant went to San Diego, TX. Project in San Diego, CA. He grew up on Houston and didn’t realize there was another San Diego. He wasn’t with the firm long
Glad you didn’t tell him to go to Paris - he’s like “oh yeah Paris TX is a short trip for me”...
Hahahahaha as someone from Rochester who constantly gets asked if I spend most weekends in the city (it’s 5.5 hours away) this is incredible
Simmer down Hurons
One associate on the project said he was sick on a Tuesday morning, so he was told to go home (meaning the hotel). We couldn’t find him the next day and called to find out where he was and if he was all right. He had booked a flight back to his home city. All we could do is say to his manager was, ‘well, you did say go home.'
Manager is an idiot, not the associate
Someone (new to consulting) booked their air travel for six months straight and then got booted from the project the next week.
We book travels for 3mo straight all the time in the M.E. There are hundreds of consultants commuting between Dubai and Riyadh, if you want to ensure a seat and decent prices you book way ahead. Even if you need to pay fees to change or cancel later on, it is still worth it.
I was on a project in Akron OH, flying home one time, got to the gate, put on headphones, and went heads down into my laptop. Totally missed boarding. I finally look up and realized I was the only one left at the gate. Last flight of the day so I had to stay overnight at a Holiday Inn Express.
Almost has that happen. Always set an alarm on my phone 30 minutes before the flight to get my attention - been known to nap before a flight too!
I have returned a hertz car in Avis and then got a bill for unreturned car....
I showed up at the airport on a Monday, boarding pass didn’t work. I’d booked client city to home airport instead of the other way around. Not that big a deal but I had a client presentation I had to reschedule
Have done it a few times in my 10+ years of travel.
Worked with a colleague whose EA kept mixing up DTW and DFW and booked him the wrong flights. He didn’t find out until he got to the airport and saw his flight was to Detroit instead of Dallas. She did not last long 😬
SA1, in the US only partners have the option to have in-office EAs. Everyone else gets an EA in either Tampa or Costa Rica 🙂 It’s way cheaper to have 700 employees in Tampa where real estate and cost of living is comparatively cheap than it is to have lots of firm internal folks in the NY, San Francisco, etc. offices.
Once booked a Chicago to Zurich, Switzerland flight with a 2 hour layover in NY. Didn’t realize our booking tool allowed layovers where you had to change airports. Found out when I got to the airport that I was landing at LGA and leaving from JFK. Flight from ORD was (of course) 30 min delayed and I ended up getting to JFK 55 min before my flight to Switzerland. Swiss Air stood strong on their 60 min rule and wouldn’t let me on the plane.
I’m hyper vigilant about airport codes on connections now
Good explanation, thanks!!
One of our new analysts didn’t return the car to the rental booth, but drove the rental car right to the departure gate. Walked out of his rental and went straight to security. Car got tolled with a hefty bill.
Where... where did he park it? In a lot or literally curbside?
Had to schedule a flight over the phone once and I told the PwC concierge person I needed a flight to DULLES airport in DC/Virginia (emphasized the Virginia part several times) .....guess who got a flight ticket to DALLAS, TEXAS 🙄🙄
@d4 I assume the instructions were to fly to st louis
My client sent me to Saint Quentin in France. I flew to Paris and headed south into Loire valley. Turns out there are like 10 Saint Quentins in France. The one I wanted was near Belgium. That was a long day.
Got upgraded on fly day and refused to be delayed. Drove with a flat until tired disappeared. Left the car on the side of the highway and got an Uber to make my upgraded flight. Called hertz on the way with the mile marker of their car. Surprisingly no charge
Early morning flight and stomach bug made me goto first bathroom I saw at airport after the parking lot shuttle ride. I am doing my thing and I hear women’s voices outside my stall. (I am a dude). I realize there is a trash can next to the toilet (ladies we don’t have that in our bathrooms). It hits me I am in women’s restroom. My flight is leaving soon. I wait a bit, but women keep coming and going. I finally realize I need to leave unless I want to miss my flight. I walk out of the stall, with suitcase, these two bewildered ladies see me leave the stall. I don’t stop walking but just look at them and say “wrong restroom” and walk as fast as I can to security. Luckily nothing happened. This was 15 years ago. I ALWAYs check signs now !
I was with you to til the no hand washing part.
So you were patient zero of the spread of that GI bug’ outbreak. Totally not cool.
BA from the north side of Philly drove to PHL, flew to LGA, and rented a car each week for a project on Long Island. The total drive was just over two hours. Clueless or collecting points.
Yup. I live in the western suburbs of Philly and have never managed to get to the JFK area in under 3.5 hours by car. For clients in LI it’s Amtrak to NY Penn, LIRR to a close station then either rent a car (if an option) or Uber.
Had a Partner who told his EA he need to be at XYZ headquarters Monday, book travel. He admittedly did not know where this company was located and did not look into it.
EA did simple google search of location, booked his travel to Newfoundland. Company was actually in Michigan, which he discovered while flying to St. John’s.
This, if true, is just laziness on the part of the partner.
When I was junior staff my Director flew to Ontario, CA instead of Toronto, ON. The best part is she didn’t realize the problem when she laid over in Phoenix or when she exited the airport and it was 75 degrees in the winter. She discovered there was an issue when she put the address into her rental car navigation.
She’s one of my favorite people and at that moment I learned we ALL make mistakes sometimes.
CSE1 you get the point of this entire thread right? Calm down over there
We told a colleague from India to fly to Midland. He lands in Midland and spends the night in the hotel. Next day he asks the cab driver to take him to the address, but the cab driver does know where it is and can’t find it. After very confusing back and forth between the cab driver and the multiple project team members we figured he was in Midland TX instead of Midland MI.
I was thinking UK, TBH.
