Got a new job offer and want to work at said company. They offered me relocation after asking from the initial offer. I had reiterated to the HR rep that I needed it to break my lease. Had to accept the offer before the exact detail of the relocation were given to me because the HR rep did not know. Now I have an accepted offer but the relocation will cost me an additional $3k+ to break my lease. Start date is supposed to be Jan 6th so it puts me in a bind with the holidays and this HR team has been extremely slow with everything.
Did you quit your other job? You can give everything back and move on. Just say you can’t afford the move and either they make it up to you in salary or gross you up on the relocation. Frankly, it’s BS when a firm says they won’t talk relocation until you accept the offer. You need to understand all of the economics when you change a job. I once had a company tell me they would go over the health insurance when I accept the offer (my child requires specialists), so I walked. Turns out my out of pocket would have tripled under their plan.
TLDR: look at all of the economics when taking a new job (especially requiring a move).
