Boss asking for feedback RE billables and attorney compensation (please see first post)

My boss has been on the journey of growing his practice from sole practitioner to a law firm. He has now hired a few lawyers (including me) and realizes he needs to review and establish a more thoughtful compensation structure, including what his expectations from us will be as the other side of that coin. Because he's a wonderful guy, he has invited us to give him feedback regarding what we think is fair on both fronts. This is slightly more complicated because most of the firms I've reviewed provide annual "billable" hour requirements, and my boss (understandably) is only concerned about a minimum "collectible" hour requirement.

I'm a fan of data-based opinions, so I am turning to Reddit to try and find out what is customary in this day and age. Ideally, I'd particularly like to hear from people in firms like ours; a small firm in a HCOL area that focuses on estate planning and estate administration, including taxable/complex estates, but we do not do litigation. (In addition to our boss, we have a few of attorneys ranging from freshly barred to almost 8yrs experience. Many have a tax LL.M.) If you are willing, please share with me the following:

-What type of law do you practice?

-Is your firm big, medium, or small? HCOL or LCOL area?

-What does your firm expect from you regarding minimum billable or collectible hours? If your firm has a billable minimum, how much of that are you expected to collect?

-How much your firm pay your attorneys, including salary, how bonuses are structured, and/or other financial compensation? What is the experience level for this level of pay?

-What other non-wage compensation does your firm provide? (CLEs, 401(k), dental, PTO, paid holidays, etc.)

-Anything else we should consider?

Thank you!

A colleague told me today that Google separates Product Manager and Product Owner as two separate roles. I believe that one PM role is preferred in the industry and most modern software companies, especially FAANG companies, only have PMs. Just curious what others have experienced and if I'm correct in my assumption.

Anyone on here familiar with California’s treatment of a conservation easement deduction for individual taxpayers? I’ve found a bunch of research indicating it’s limited to 30% of AGI, but the people who orchestrated this whole deal think it’s 50% of AGI.

Any advice for understanding whether sourcing would be a good match for your personality/innate skill set?

Im pretty extroverted, I have been told in reviews that I peak in verbal communication, and I have really loved conducting expert interviews in DDs.

However, I’ve worked some sales jobs in the past, and I had a hard time with the variability and staying positive bad times when nothing is sticking.

I've been a government attorney for nearly three years now and have worked in the same office/division since I passed the bar. I've yet to receive a promotion other than two cost of living increases (in sum, a pay increase of 6k over 3 years). I know this is meager, but I'm mostly ok with it, I just want to see some recognition. On the other hand, it's hard for me to imagine negotiating because (given my inexperience), I don't feel I'd be able to do better anywhere else. Any advice?

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

I'm entering my final year of law school but am going part time since I work full time as a paralegal. I have been a paralegal for more 10+ years and I want to open my own firm after I pass the bar.

I've worked at a lot of different size firms including a startup with a few attorneys and I was able to help with a lot of the ground work with getting the practice management system in place and still do some of that now at my current firm. Has anyone done this right out of law school? Any advice?

Anyone have any tips or ideas on how to collect money owed from a client? In a few months it’ll be two years since the debt was incurred. We send monthly reminders of the bill. A friend of mine and I are both starting our life firms from scratch. We both do two different areas of law. How can we help each other with referrals and networking? We live in an area that’s pretty geographically large in two different parts of town.

How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end.
