I went through this the last 2 years and feel like it set me back promotion wise. I wish I had stepped up the first year and said something about how it did not align with my goals. If you are in industry stepping up and saying something might be more difficult and I could definitely see there being retaliation.
I did both tasks (which was brutal), built a team around me for the whimsical stuff, got my boss to see how much of an impact my high value work was having, and then asked her to choose which I should prioritize. She moved me off the whimsical since I had got a team going there and had me focus on high value work. But TBD on YE review!
I would ask for a career discussion with your boss - separate from your regular 1:1s if you have. In the meeting, express your desire for promotion and share your expectations on what you think you need to do for the boss to be supportive of a promotion - this should be directly tied to meeting/exceeding your business goals. If you don’t know what you need to get promoted, then you use that time to ask: what do I need to do to get promoted in 6-12 months (or whatever timeline you want to advocate for)? Challenge your boss to give you the concrete expectations. This way, you can say no to future “whimsical work” and instead focus on the high impact work that you and your boss have agreed will be what gets your promoted. Does that plan seem reasonable?
