Rising Star
Can't speak on Richmond, but I grew up in Houston/lived there for 15 years.
Galveston is fun for a Saturday afternoon but largely nothing to write home about. The beach water is brown. And it floods frequently. It practically turned into the lost island of Atlantis after Hurricane Harvey.
There are some great spots in Texas, but I don't know if I'd say that's one.
Rising Star
My biased vote is for Richmond.
Tell me more 👂
Texas has no income tax. But also, like, do you get the news out there in California?
I love Richmond. It’s really become my home over the years. Close to the beach, mountains and DC. Happy to chat if you have Qs in DM.
I recall that Galveston has some bad environmental issues. Texas has terrible deregulated oil and gas refineries in that area I believe. I think Richmond is the better play and puts you that much closer to the northeast corridor with many more career options IMO. Galveston sounds like a bit of a dead end. Austin is booming though (but maybe too much).
Lol what ad agency is in Galveston I grew up there and wouldn’t recommend it.
if you’re thinking Galveston because you want CA sand and CA water for your beaches, then please please please think again.
This^ it’s barely a beach and it’s gross compared to CA
Props to the marketing folks I. Galveston for even getting on your radar. I mean, really.
I’m not a believer in the Richmond-is-so-great narrative, because I have only ever met people who currently live there who say that- no one that has left. So, to me, it always has that vibe of “please, come! Join us! We neeeeeed more cool people!”
It’s a very small town with some cool stuff right downtown, but otherwise it’s the South plus dull suburbs. So very similar to a million other tiny cities.
Key is to think about what kind of life you want. Walking? driving? Public transit? How to you picture your ideal weekend? What kind of friends will you wan to meet? Hipsters? Young families? Sports bros? What kind of architecture do you like? Or does the physical look of a place not impact you as much? What’s your dream house/neighborhood look like?
Think about those kinds of things to drive your decision.
When you say “Richmond” do you mean downtown Richmond (the city), or the overall area? I ask because ifs you move to a suburb (Mechanicsville, Glen Allen, Chesterfield, etc.) it is just like every other suburb in the entire USA. Richmond proper has a cool vibe. And it is true about the proximity to mountains, beach, NOVA, but all are about 2 hours away.
I didn’t love Richmond in my late 20s early 30s and chose to move back to Chicago area, but I would go back now... push I’m a huge history buff and I never fully took advantage of exploring all the historical site in the area.
Never been to Galveston. Good luck and have fun exploring this choice you have!
PS! I’m from the Midwest. So a two-hour drive to something is way better to me than taking a plane trip and a week+ off to enjoy a beach or mountainous area.
Richmond.
It’s a small town, but it has its charm. Cheap and easy, lots of nature, great food, art, beer scenes. Decent music scene depending on what kind of music you like. VCU art school is top notch and the city is affordable for creative types (talking real creative, not advertising) to support themselves making art, so the city has more culture than you’d expect.
But it’s not LA or NYC, so you have to adjust to a slower, smaller life. For many that’s a welcome change from big city ad life. For others, it’s suffocating.
Good luck wherever you land!
Galveston is traaaash lmao. Texas beaches aren’t beaches at all. I would definitely do richmond. I live in Austin but there’s lots of cute smaller towns around here. I wouldn’t recommend any beaches in Texas tho
VA is still not an entirely fun place to be if you’re a POC 🤷♂️
Really? I am a POC. Yikes.
Eh if you must go to Texas Dallas or Austin. Been there, and what even is in Galveston?!
It’s a little island! Kind of cool — check it out.
texas is extremely humid and mosquitoey i’ve heard. And i feel like a lot of the nature is privatized especially compared to california
