I want to add to this. If you simply don’t have time to do the legwork, finding a broker to do the legwork for you is an option. They will do terrible work, they will show you at most five apartments, and that’s for two reasons. They don’t think they should do more than four hours of work for a $5000 commission, and whoever is representing the party with an apartment you want to see will not return their calls. They have no interest in sharing their fee with the broker you hired. And it doesn’t matter if the broker says they’ve already been paid.

Luckily I can see how this recession shakes out. I'm in a two year lease but I feel like I've grown out of my apartment.

Found my apt by scouring StreetEasy for 3-4 months. We are in a 1200 sqft 2BR on the UES and pay a little less than 5K.
it’s all about finding buildings and then brokers will refer you to upcoming listings that are off market
Brokers search StreetEasy. You can do this yourself.
Even the huge leasing companies post on street easy.
Do you have specific neighborhoods in mind? I recently worked with a broker and he was actually great - super responsive, showed me bunch of units not listed yet, etc.
