So I just got a written job offer for a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer position. The offer was $142k, with a $10k signing bonus.

It is a little bit lower than what a few other people I know have gotten over the past few weeks in similar positions. I want to counter the offer but I want to make sure I'm not going so high that they balk and walk away. Knowing that others have gotten $145k and a $15k bonus, how high would be too high in a counter offer? Is $150k too much to ask?

I see a lot of people making more money when they exit. In my experience, I have yet to find a role that pays more for a similar level of responsibility in a similar location. Current M in T&O at $153k in the Midwest (not Chicago). Offers I’ve seen at the manager level in industry in similar midwestern cities at the manager level are typically between $110-130k with a 15-30% bonus. Please help! I have always wanted to live in NYC (currently live in the Midwest). I have the opportunity to move in with a friend to an apartment in NYC for about 2k/month. Currently my salary is 95k, I’m maxing out my 401k, Roth IRA, and contributing to employee share plan. After all of that my biweekly take home pay is $1650. Is it stupid for me to move to nyc and pay 2k in rent with that take home pay? Is it worth while for me to decrease contributions to live my dream out for a year or two?
