I suppose that depends on the context - if it’s for unemployment or anything government related they are required to confirm how you left the company (I.e. quit, lay off, fired, etc.) but if another company is verifying most will tell them what happened just not in detail. For example if you quit because you needed to take care of a family member who was sick they might say “quit for personal/family reasons,” it really depends on who’s asking.
I thought businesses were only legally allowed to say whether or not that person was employed there and the timeframe they were employed there if they were. Nothing more. Unless that's changed.
