Can someone please tell me what the day-to-day of privacy law is (in house), compared to the day-to-day of privacy compliance for a company? Trying to understand the difference in their day-to-day tasks.

Depends on the company and size as, in some cases, these roles will overlap if there aren't sufficient resources to have both.

Privacy compliance is going to be more focused on implementation, project management, monitoring using privacy tools, and responding to routine privacy-related inquiries.

Counsel roles are going to be more focused on providing guidance and working with teams to understand and advise on their plans. Interpreting privacy law and ensuring appropriate legal documentation is completed (e.g., risk assessments, DPIAs, LIAs, DPAs).

As the above poster said. But I'll add that Legal interprets the law, takes positions, while Compliance works to implement/operationalize those interpretations. Legal negotiates contracts, Compliance helps ensure the contractual obligations are met.

Home office preference question. I am getting ready to redo the layout of my home office. One option I'm considering would have my desk facing a wall. I am wondering if anyone with this current setup has any feedback about it. I would face the wall so that I would have a better background for video conferences (am on about half the day) and also my cord situation would be cleaner.

Planning to take the CIPP and CIPM. Will be doing self-study. What is the “book” everyone refers to for studying? Is it just the “study guide” the IAPP sells? Does anyone know if the study guides and sample questions you can buy on amazon are sufficient to use for passing? Appreciate any and all advice.

Low billable, low pressure work in privacy law? Slowly realizing that as my boys get older, the money isn’t worth what I’m missing out on. Currently a tech litigation associate with lots of hearing, depo and trial experience (I’ve appeared on my own at hearings/depos) at a well respected firm. I have limited privacy experience despite being hired for that reason… Have my CIPM and CIPP/US /E and /C. Remote preferred; hubs is pilot with cool intl transfer opportunities. Money isn’t issue.

Hi all! I’m inclined on taking up the CIPM training and certification exam. I’m already a certified Data Protection Officer in the Philippines. I intend on skipping CIPP as it applies to the US and EU.

How difficult was the exam? Can you share your experience studying for the CIPM exam? Is it advisable to skip CIPP?

Many thanks in advance.
