One thing which is really lovey about Oslo in the summer is how much people enjoy the sea and bathing. People basically jump from every available rock and pier to go swimming. Not for long, it is more ‘bathing’ than ‘going swimming’. This can be done in the new Sørenga Sjøbad (seawater pool) as well as Bygdøy which is an island in the west of Oslo which also has a lot the museums and a trails as well as many beaches.
Most of the museums are pretty well known (Munch, Nobel Peace centre, Fram - the ship which Amundsen used when he became the first guy to make it to the South Pole). If you are into military history there is also a museum of the Resistance movement in WW2. The Norwegian folk/culture museum is also excellent. Aker Brygge is the traditional touristy waterfront but it is pretty to walk down. Most restaurants are pretty insanely expensive tbh so don’t try to save money. Best bet is to find a place selling foreign food run by first gen immigrants that have not been there long enough to hike up the prices.
Vigelands Park is a lovely large park which is filled with sculptures and statues by Vigeland.
Sadly the Viking ship museum is currently closed for renovations.
Remember to max out your alcohol allowance at duty free when you land. Trust me.
Source: born in Oslo. Most of my family still live there. Go back about 4 times a year.
Himkok, currently number 43 on the World’s Best 50 Bars list. Phenomenal cocktail bar; very much worth a visit if you’re into that sort of thing.
Grab a public boat around islands in Oslo fjord for (NOK 40 for single public transport ticket, most likely you will take 24h ticket for NOK 121 or 7-day ticket for NOK 335 from Ruter app).
They depart from Aker Brygge (which is a nice walk near Nobel Peace museum etc.) and take 1h. You can jump off on any island and grab a picnic (prep thermos and sandwiches). Very cool way to spend an evening before dinner :)
Also spend a day at Songsvann - amazing lake with walks, hikes. Many people swim in there during the summer, berry- and mushroom-pick.
Grab T-bane (Oslo's metro) No 1 to Frognerseteren for best views and a coffee. Apparently it's one of the most scenic metro rides in EU :)
Enjoy your trip!
This. Was about to say. Taking the ferry from the city centre and suddenly being on an island chilling is just 💯. They are super frequent, so you can go chilling for a long lunch and be back drinking at Grunerløkka in evening
Apart from famous sites, I suggest you set aside a full day for The Well. It's a great spa founded on Scandinavian culture.
Depends on what you enjoy I guess. Summer in Oslo can be super nice if you’re lucky with the weather.
Pretty decent food scene developing in the last few years if you’re into fine dining etc.
Bygdøy as mentioned over here has a pretty good folk/culture museum if the weather allows it (mostly outdoors) can also be combined with lunch/dinner at Lille Herbern, which is a super cool little place attached to a local sailing club (follow google earth to walk to the coast and wait for the local kid to pick you up for a boatride that takes 20seconds).
Sommerro is a newly renovated hotel very centrally located which is cool with a lot of restaurants/bars and a rooftop pool.
Grunerløkka is our “hipster”-area with a lot of more boutique shopping, good cafe’s/bars etc.
Omg Lille Herbern! When I go there with my parents we row because that is the fastest way to that island from their house.
Streetfood and drinks at Prindsens Hage! Maybe check if there is any festivals when you are here (if you like that). Remember to save a LOT of money, it’s expensiveeeeee💸
