Confession: I chose to pursue a career as an M&A lawyer because I watched American Psycho at age 14 and wanted to make the “murders and executions” joke, and I now realize that wasn’t the optimal thing to decide my entire life on.

I did M&A for 4 years and then realized it was terrible for my physical, mental, and spiritual health. It set me up nicely for going in house but I have no interest in doing M&A now and have been in therapy for years learning healthy work/life habits now that I don’t need to work like that anymore.

I did healthcare/life sciences M&A so that made it easy to go into pharma. But otherwise, find a niche you can target and apply to those roles. Don’t look at M&A counsel roles unless you are sure you want to keep doing that type of work. Also avoid commercial contracting roles as those can be dead end.

I’m in a sweet spot at a small/specialized pharma where I’m product counsel but also lead commercial contracting and act as privacy officer.

Yeah but you got that part wrong too. The whole premise is investment banking. Lawyers have never been cool and never will be.

Silence of the Lambs made me want to be a profiler for the FBI. Fortunately a college guidance counselor told me that was dumb and to pivot

Has anyone quit their job because of a relationship? I started my job 3 months ago and now my employer wants me to move to NY. I would honestly quit my job and wouldn't mind the job search again.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?
