Curious from the partners’ perspective, what’s the difference between write-offs vs. not billing. I spent 12 hours on a substantive memo on a new inquiry from an existing client. Partner told me to enter my time under a non-billable development number. This partner is also known for using juniors for free labor for biz dev purposes and I wonder how to diplomatically say no. Why can’t partners just let associates bill their time and then write off? Will write-offs hurt the partner financially?

Mention it to someone else (trusted senior or partner). You can’t really say no so I’d just take it and avoid working with him again

So my VP at my previous company felt bad and refused to speak to me or attend my farewell after my resignation. His reason was that I somehow betrayed his trust as he had promoted me just last year (after keeping the position open for 4 months and letting me take additional work load after the previous SM left!). Does this make any sense? I mean where does this sense of entitlement or ownership over the employees come from? No wonder the company in question is kind of facing a literal exodus!

I’ve been having a bit of trouble working with one partner at a new firm. There are definitely things I can/need to work on for improvement, but I’ve been practicing for four years and have had no trouble with other partners/peers before. This partner sent an email to me with bills for one client of his/hers I worked on and now looped in a practice management person to have a ‘management call’ (prob to talk about billing less..) Should I be looking for other opportunities?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)
