What they don’t see is the chaos in the back: boxes piled higher than me, coworkers rushing around trying to track down missing products, or someone frantically mopping up a spill before a customer slips. It always amazes me how much happens behind the scenes just to make it all look effortless.

If customers could see one behind-the-scenes moment at your job, what would shock them most?

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.

At a different job I had a customer trying to swindle me in telling me that there was a deal in an item that never had a deal or promotion for sale so he made me scan the item 20 times before believing me. Obviously, he finally let it go but I scan it with an inventory scanner that showed me all of the sale price promotions if there were any

I had customers tell me how amazing the salads I make for them. It’s great that I can make salads that good!
