Dealing with federal bureaucracy can be one of the most frustrating parts of being a federal contractor. Whether it’s waiting for approvals or getting stuck in the complex decision-making processes, it can slow down progress. For those who have been in the federal space for a while, any advice for cutting through the red tape and getting things done efficiently?

I hear you, the delays can be so frustrating. One thing that’s helped me is building solid relationships with key people in the decision-making process. Having an internal advocate who can push things along really helps. Has anyone else tried using a network of allies within the agency to expedite approvals?

I would say there are two things you can do. 1. Finding ways to get through the red tape per your questions and 2. Understanding why the red tape is there which doesn't help significantly with getting things done but it does lower the frustration.

Like the previous answer, relationships go a long long way. My approach is to build my "credit bank" Godfather style by doing favors for those I will need favors from later. Going back to understanding the red tape, knowing the reasons and process can help you avoid pitfalls and figure out what to ask for.

The majority of the red tape is there in an attempt to protect taxpayers. Many disagree with the approach but the purpose is a good one.

Humans are very unpredictable and are very good at maximizing happiness. We are greedy creatures which is why we're always trying to find the "deal" and how to take the "express lane". To be honest, this question demonstrates that. 😁
We LOVE shortcuts.

If you go for interview and you sort of know that the person interviewing you might be curious about something on your negative on your resume like why is there a gap or why were you in XX role for so long?

Do you address it pre-emptively? Or does that show insecurity and you leave the elephant in the room and wait till they ask you?

I guess this is more in the case of networking than interview like do you make your own story?

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.

What's the market these days for someone with not-great technical skills, 12 YOE, TS clearance, hard-to-find/unique skillset, elite masters, middle management in DoD contracting, experience with critical/high profile roles?

I'm thinking 120-135k would be bad/mediocre, 180-195k would be possible/a stretch, and 160-170k would be doable/realistic. Thoughts? Not interested in Deloitte.
